It is difficult to think of any animal that appears in more colors or is used in as many varieties of forms as the abalone. It is also difficult to find an animal that has as much controversy, conflict, love, and admiration surrounding it as the abalone. These creatures hardly ever move from the spot where they first begin to develop, never reach much more than six or seven inches across, (except for Red Abalone), but yet they have managed to demand international scrutiny and admiration for much of the last century.

Most people probably have never heard of abalone, but those that do probably have a kind of passion for the pursuit of them in the form of hunting, or in the form of eating (probably both) that is comparable to, but actually more intense than, that of avid trout fishermen or diehard baseball fans. Abalone represent a time gone by, in a way, a time when most of the earth's natural resources were still fairly bountiful, and it seemed that this bounty would never be diminished. Unfortunately, like so many other things, abalone now must be protected and carefully managed, often to the point of imposing a complete ban on their harvest, in order to allow their populations to recover from years of overenthusiastic harvesting and preserve them for the future as a sustainable resource.
